【梗概】
Hemingway Studies in Japanは、日本におけるヘミングウェイ研究の成果を国際的に発信することを目的として、日本の研究者による論文16編を英訳・収録した英文論文集である。日本では1930年に早くもヘミングウェイ作品の翻訳が刊行され、1940年代末から本格的な研究が始まった。1954年には日本初のヘミングウェイ研究書『ヘミングウェイ研究』が刊行され、その後、リアリズムや文体を中心とする研究から、伝記、草稿、ジェンダー、セクシュアリティ、人種、文化研究などへと領域を拡大してきた。1992年には日本ヘミングウェイ協会が設立され、日本の研究者は国際ヘミングウェイ学会にも継続的に参加してきた。しかし、研究成果の多くは日本語で発表され、英語圏では十分に知られてこなかった。本書は、こうした研究の蓄積を英語圏の研究者や学生に提示する試みである。
本書は五部から構成される。第Ⅰ部「Text and “Hemingway”」では、短編小説の文体・言語的特徴、詩と友人ドーマン＝スミスとの関係、『移動祝祭日』の草稿と死後編集を、テクスト分析や草稿研究から検討する。第Ⅱ部「Aging, Death, and Medical History」では、医学史、間テクスト性、身体論、ジェンダー・セクシュアリティ、国家権力などの観点から、身体、病、老い、死を考察する。第Ⅲ部「Sensory Representations」では、セザンヌ絵画と散文の身体性、『日はまた昇る』における音と沈黙、音楽と騒音、闘牛をめぐる嗅覚を通して、身体感覚と文学との関係を論じる。第Ⅳ部「Cultural Identities」では、先住民女性、優生思想、黒人男性、ヴァナキュラーな文体を取り上げ、人種、ジェンダー、階級、政治と文化的アイデンティティを検討する。第Ⅴ部「Geopolitical Context and The Old Man and the Sea」では、『老人と海』を、人種を越えた連帯、帝国をめぐる文化政治、戦前・戦後日本の武士道言説と映画受容から読み直す。
これらの論考に共通するのは、非英語母語話者である日本の研究者がテクストを精緻に読み、異なる言語的・文化的・歴史的視点からヘミングウェイを捉え直す姿勢である。本書は、日本で蓄積されてきた研究を英語圏へ開き、日本と海外の研究を架橋することで、より多元的かつ国際的なヘミングウェイ研究の発展に寄与することを目指すものである。
なお、本書はFlorida State Open Publishingよりオープンアクセスのデジタル出版物として刊行され、世界中の読者が無料で閲覧できる形で公開されている。
