How does Japan \u201cchallenge\u201d outsiders? This symposium, organized by the University of Tokyo Faculty of Letters (Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology) aims to rethink the recent tendency towards straightforward praise for cultural globalization, and to debate the barriers created by the reception of Japanese culture overseas, and by the reception of foreign cultures in Japan. International exchange is always accompanied by obstacles and misunderstandings, but the humanities-and in particular the various fields of literature-seem particularly sensitive in their responses to these difficulties. How has Japan been seen, and experienced, by others at the moment of cultural encounter? How is the \u201cimage of Japan\u201d received abroad, and what occurs at the moment of translation? How can literature imagine ways to reshape and transcend these barriers? And how is this intertwined with issues of education within humanities departments? By shedding light on these various questions, we plan to think again about Japan\u2019s position in cultural globalization.

Our key words in this symposium are the contrasting ideas of the \u201cchallenge\u201d in English, and the \u201cwall\u201d (kabe) in Japanese. Reflecting the transformations and ambiguities inherent in the act of translation, the two words have deliberately different emphases. The \u201cwall\u201d suggests the way in which the linguistic and cultural difference of Japan has often led to it being regarded as an \u201cOther\u201d. Efforts to promote understanding from inside and outside Japan-notably the \u201cCool Japan\u201d movement-have not only assumed the existence of the \u201cwall\u201d, but arguably often reinforced it through exoticism and the circulation of stereotypical views. The word \u201cchallenge\u201d, by contrast, implies the difficulties associated with the \u201cwall\u201d, but also implies the possibility of traversing it through a process of introspection, effort, and mutual co-operation.

\u6982\u8981\uff1aAntigone has stood for many things since Hegel\u2019s reading of Sophocles\u2019 classic play in The Phenomenology of Spirit. For champions of universal human rights, Antigone\u2019s ethical defiance of Creon\u2019s political law represents a heroic devotion to basic familial rights in the face of arbitrary state power. In contrast, for anti-humanists Antigone is a paragon of pure, pre-symbolic desire that flouts the possibility of humanist political engagement: Jacques Lacan famously admired her monstrous desire for death that defies all meaning and signification, and Slavoj ?i?ek has focused on her total and absolute \u201cno\u201d that transcends Creon\u2019s political laws. Not completely dissimilarly, Nicole Loraux saw in Antigone\u2019s death cry an extra-linguistic expression of pain that put her, again, beyond politics. And for Judith Butler, Antigone\u2019s laments\u2015even as they point to the \u201climits of representation and representability\u201d\u2015mark the eruption of \u201cunspeakable loss\u201d into public life and serve as a \u201cmortal humanist\u201d pre-political basis for politics.
Against such anti-political readings of Sophocles\u2019 play, in \u201cAntigone\u2019s Two Laws\u201d Bonnie Honig recognizes the overtly agonistic, political position occupied by the tragic hero. For Honig, Antigone\u2015the protagonist (\u201cprimary actor\u201d) of Sophocles\u2019 play\u2015speaks and acts agonistically against Creon\u2019s state authority. In this talk, I will review Honig\u2019s reading of Antigone and discuss how it may have wider implications for recent revivals of humanism witnessed in various fields. In particular, I will discuss its relevance for the field of the ethics of care\u2015developed by feminist thinkers such as Joan Tronto, Eva Feder Kittay, Virginia Held, Elizabeth V. Spelman, and more recently Fabienne Brug?re\u2015which has much in common with Butler\u2019s ethics of mourning in its critiques of Kantian liberalism and Lockean social contract theory.
