Travel Grant Information

1. Purpose
To assist ELSJ members to travel overseas to read a paper at a meeting outside Japan.

2. The amount and number of grants
\150,000 each will be awarded to several people every year.

3. Eligibility
Applicant must be a current member of the English Literary Society of Japan.
Applicant must be a resident of Japan who is going to read a paper at a meeting held outside Japan. At present, only those who read a paper are eligible. Participants in symposium, seminar, forum, colloquium, or workshop are not entitled to apply. Also those who have secured a fund from a public institution (such as the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Japan Foundation, and other cultural institutions) are ineligible.

4. How to apply
(1) Application deadlines are the end of March and September, which must be at least 3 months before the date of paper reading.
(2) Application form can be obtained from the ELSJ office. Please write to the address below. A stamped, self-addressed envelope must be enclosed.

(3) Applicants should enclose these three documents with the application form.
@ Four copies of an invitation letter from the relevant society or institute, or a notification of appointment, or something like that.
A Four copies of a synopsis of the paper, approximately 1,000 words, typed on A4 sized paper.
B Four copies each of curriculum vitae and a brief list of academic achievements.

5. Selection and Notification of Results
The directors of the ELSJ are responsible for the selection. The results will be sent to the applicants no later than a month before the relevant meeting is held. Names of the awardees of the grant will be printed in the newsletter, together with titles of the papers, names of the meetings, and venues.

6. Reporting Responsibilities
Awardees must submit receipts of air tickets and the programme of the meeting. Photocopies will be acceptable.

7. Notes
(1) Awardees must return the whole amount of the grant, when they decide not to read the paper, or when they are sure to be funded by a public institution.
(2) Awardees are not entitled to apply for the grant in the succeeding year.
(3) Awardees must give notice of having received the grant when they publish the paper funded by it.
