【梗概】
　本書はギャスケルの没後150年を記念して企画されたもので、16ヶ国35名の研究者による批評論文集である。ギャスケルをヴィクトリア朝のハト派の作家としたＤ・セシルに代表される従来の否定的な評価も、彼女の死後100年が経過した1960年代半ばに批評書や書簡集の刊行が相次いだことで改善され、70年代以降はフェミニズム批評家たちによって彼女のタカ派の側面が掘り起こされるようになった。本書では、女性を抑圧したヴィクトリア朝の時代精神と社会風潮に見られる「悪とその変奏」に関する共時的な考察と、歴史の流れに沿った悪の通時的な解釈を踏まえた作品分析が様々な視点からなされている。本書は平成27年度科学研究費補助金・研究成果公開促進費（学術図書 課題番号 15HP5053）の助成を受けている。
